Dine Like It’s 1996

The ’90s were a time for Friends, Tamagotchis, Titanic and the dulcet tones of Beck’s “Loser,” but the real winners were the dishes that defined a decade. From non-fat plates to towers of “tall food,” the ’90s were all about trying new things. Let’s take a taste test of some of the most popular dishes of years past.

PIZZA BAGELS

“Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at supper time. When pizza’s on a bagel, you can eat pizza anytime.” If this little ditty wasn’t stuck in your head for the better part of the 90s, you were missing out on one of the best food mash-ups of all time. That is until our Cheesesteak Eggrolls came along.

MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE

Allegedly invented by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in 1987, the Molten Chocolate Cake erupted with popularity in the 90s. Baked in a ramekin, the delicious dessert is comprised of only four ingredients: butter, eggs, chocolate and sugar. But to be fair, when one of your four ingredients is chocolate you can’t go wrong.

CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD

While Chicken Caesar Salad may not have been invented in the 90s, it’s when it found its stride. In fact, the Caesar salad was said to be invented by Ceasar Cardini in 1924 when his kitchen had depleted all its supplies and he did the best with what he had. Some might say he was the Chopped Champion of his time.

SLIM FAST

Though it’s not technically a food, you couldn’t turn a city block in the 90s without seeing someone with a Slim Fast in hand. The company was actually started in 1977 but didn’t find overwhelming popularity until the surge of “low-fat” trends swept across the 90s.

TEQUILA LIME SHRIMP

Last, but certainly not least, is Sullivan’s own Tequila Lime Shrimp. It was always a longtime fan favorite around these parts and after countless requests for its revival we are excited to bring it back in honor of our 20th Anniversary. Tequila-marinated shrimp, honey-lime glaze on a bed of black beans and pico de gallo: what’s not to love?

These are just a few of our ’90s favorites. What was your favorite food trend of the past? Share your picks in the comments!
